07/15/2010: 'Just Another Saturday Night' review in All Music Guide

Just a Saturday Night is clearly a re-release, not a reissue. In February 2010, the Villains' debut album was released as a self-titled, 28-minute CD. Then, in late June 2010, the album was re-released by Rock Ridge Music as Just Another Saturday Night. The front cover had the same illustration, and all eight of the songs that appeared on the February 2010 version also appear on this re-release. But one track was added: a pleasing cover of Pure Prairie League's "Amie." So the main things that separate Just Another Saturday Night from the February 2010 version are a new title and the inclusion of "Amie," which is an appropriate song for the Villains to perform given all their '70s soft rock influences (the Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, and the Eagles, among others). It stands to reason that a laid-back, country-influenced adult alternative/roots rock band that draws comparisons to groups like the Goo Goo Dolls, Counting Crows, and the Gin Blossoms, and has a lot of '70s influences would be into Pure Prairie League. That said, someone who already owns the original 28-minute February 2010 release doesn't necessarily need to run out and buy this 32-minute CD just to hear "Amie." But for those who don't already own the February 2010 release, that addition is nothing to complain about. Derivative but consistently enjoyable, Just Another Saturday Night leaves the listener with a favorable impression of the Villains. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi All Music Guide
